Repeatedly recognized by several independent ranking services as one of Connecticut’s top trial attorneys for the injured, Jeffrey has compiled an impressive record of verdicts and settlements on behalf of his clients over the past 13 years, several of which have exceeded $2,000,000 dollars.  During that time, Jeffrey has successfully represented children and adults in personal injury and wrongful death matters stemming from complex medical malpractice, birth trauma, defective medical products, product liability, train and truck collisions, negligent security, premises liability, car and motorcycle accidents, liquor liability, civl rights violations and other catastrophic injury producing events in and around greater Bridgeport and throughout Connecticut.  Jeffrey prides himself on the fact that most of his clients come to him either by word of mouth from existing or former clients or by referral from other attorneys.

Trial Attorney Experience

Jeffrey has tried over 30 cases to verdict in state and federal courts, and is never afraid to try a case if he believes it is in his client’s best interest to do so.  Four months after becoming a lawyer, Jeffrey tried his first personal injury case for a movie theatre security guard who was injured as a pedestrian at work while directing traffic and obtained a jury verdict that was 10x more than what the insurance company offered prior to trial.  In Jeffrey’s eyes, it was fair compensation based on the extent of his client’s injuries.  From then on Jeffrey knew the only way he was going to level the playing field between his injured clients and moneyed special interests like insurance companies, healthcare lobbyists and big corporations that stood in the way, was through the power of jury trials.

In 2011, Jeffrey obtained a jury verdict in excess of a quarter of a million dollars for a woman who suffered a shattered spleen resulting in a splenectomy during a routine colonoscopy procedure against a local gastroenterologist who denied all wrongdoing and refused to make any settlement offers prior to trial.  In 2013, he obtained one of the largest (if not the largest) jury verdicts at the time in excess of 2.8 million dollars on behalf of the estate of an injured motorcyclist who was struck and killed by a drunk driver while driving his vintage Harley Davidson through the backroads of Wilton.  In December of 2015, Jeffrey obtained a jury verdict in excess of $330,000 for a client who was injured in a violent collision with another vehicle after running a stop sign that he proved was concealed by overgrown vegetation in a municipal highway defect case against a local city that denied all wrongdoing and offered no money to settle prior to trial.

Personal Injury Recognition

Jeffrey’s achievements in plaintiff’s personal injury law have earned recognition from his peers as well as his clients.  He has been named a Top Rated Medical Malpractice Attorney by Super Lawyers, a Top Attorney in Personal Injury by AVVO (10.0 rating), a Top 100 Connecticut Trial Lawyer by the National Trial Lawyers, a Nationally Ranked Top 10 Personal Injury Attorney by the National Academy of Personal Injury Attorneys and a Connecticut Top 40 Litigation Lawyer by the American Society of Legal Advocates, all before turning 40.  In 2015, Jeffrey was honored by the American Institute of Personal Injury Attorneys as one of Connecticut’s 10 Best in Client Satisfaction as well as by the Global Directory of Who’s Who as a Top Lawyer in Personal Injury Law.  While proud of his accomplishments, Jeffrey understands that far more important than any award or recognition, however, is the satisfaction he receives by helping his injured clients receive the compensation they deserve and by holding wrongdoers accountable for their actions.

Education & Background

Jeffrey received his bachelor’s degree from Trinity College in 1999 and his law degree from Quinnipiac University School of Law in 2001.  While at Quinnipiac, Jeffrey was recognized for his distinguished academic achievement in Trial Practice, where he was given an opportunity to fine-tune his trial skills through role-playing in simulated trials.  During this time, Jeffrey also worked full time as a civil courtroom clerk in the New Haven Superior Court.  Among other things, this provided him the opportunity to observe hundreds of  jury trials from the start of jury selection all the way through to the announcement of the verdict.  Mr. Cooper’s entire legal career has been spent fighting for the rights of people who have been injured due to the wrongdoing of others.  Before founding Cooper Sevillano, Mr. Cooper practiced exclusively this type of law as a partner at a prominent mid-sized firm in Bridgeport.
