Gerald H. Cooper

Gerry Cooper pictureMr. Cooper concentrates his practice in the area of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) providing mediation and arbitration services in personal injury, medical malpractice and fee dispute cases.  His goal with every case is to achieve settlement.  If a case does not settle at mediation, he invests time in following up with the parties and takes an active role in helping them reach a favorable resolution prior to trial.

Mr. Cooper has a unique understanding of what it takes to settle a claim.  Twenty-five years ago, he entered the field of mediation and arbitration when it was still in its infancy.  Now it is commonplace for parties to seek out mediators or arbitrators to help resolve personal injury claims.  Mr. Cooper has both the experience and longevity to be considered a powerhouse in the field.  His skills as a mediator and arbitrator have often been sought by individuals, private companies and the courts.  He has mediated or arbitrated thousands of claims and has been recognized as a leading neutral in Connecticut, helping parties to resolve claims and avoid costly or prolonged litigation.    In the 1980s, when uninsured motorist claims required arbitration, Mr. Cooper defended numerous cases at arbitration hearings and was selected to serve as a neutral arbitrator in several such cases.

Background & Experience

Prior to starting Cooper Sevillano, from 2004 to 2012, Mr. Cooper practiced at his own firm which was entirely dedicated to ADR in personal injury, medical malpractice and fee dispute cases.  His unique experience and talent in the area of ADR helps to set Cooper Sevillano apart from other firms.

Mr. Cooper also brings to the firm over three decades of experience in the tough competitive business of trial law.  He dedicated 33 years of his long career to practicing insurance defense for Allstate Insurance ultimately serving as Lead Counsel in the company’s New Haven office.  At Allstate, he tried over 100 civil jury cases and settled thousands of others using pretrial alternative dispute resolution (ADR) techniques.  This wealth of knowledge makes him one of Cooper Sevillano’s most valuable assets.  He provides the firm with an intimate understanding of how insurance companies handle personal injury claims which results in better and more realistic outcomes for the firm’s clients.

In addition, Mr. Cooper spent six years as Assistant Corporation Counsel to the City of West Haven.  In this capacity, Mr. Cooper defended the city in a wide range of cases in both State and Federal courts including claims against the police, municipal liability claims, and civil rights claims.
